1. Just what the heck is going on here?
This is a site inspired by, supporting and about Girls Rock! The Movie, a documentary about the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls. Like the movie, this site seeks to let girls speak for themselves and talk about what's bothering them and interesting them in the world and in their lives, especially music! We will also be keeping up to date with news about the film and other things that interest the filmmakers, and the camp will have their own blogs too. A good portion of the writers here are campers, former campers and camp staff...and you!
2. Okay, so how do I get involved?
If you aren't someone we already knew through the camp, you can still become a member. First, create a new account from the appropriate link. As a new member, you wont be able to publish any comments for one week. This helps us keep the site Safe, Supportive and Sane.
What's a Diary?
Diaries, basically blogs, publish instantly to the Diary section and your blog area. This way you can build your own audience through the site. Diaries can also be recommended, and if an entry gets enough recommendations it'll be bumped to the front page.
5. Once I get a diary, can I say whatever I want?
We encourage you to speak your mind freely, with a couple exceptions. This is a site for girls and women to speak their minds in a safe and encouraging community, much like the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls. Therefore, any racist, homophobic, sexist or other hurtful writings will first most likely get your post deleted, and repeated actions will see your membership revoked.
6. What if someone's leaving mean comments on my diary?
We strongly discourage flaming and encourage you all to treat each other with the respect you deserve. Because this is a community edited site, anyone can rate your comments and diaries, and this will give you a very quick sense of what's inappropriate language as opposed to healthy dialogue and debate, as you will find yourself unable to comment anymore. If someone has said something particularly hurtful that you want off the site immediately, you can contact us at info@girlsrockmovie.com.
7. Can I give people my email or contact info if I want to form a band or something?
Unfortunately, due to the need for safety on the web, we can't let you make any contact info public. If we find any contact info published publicly, or any requests for such info, we will delete the posts immediately and put the account on probation.
8, Can I put video or music in my posts, like if I wrote a song or something?
Yes, you can put the proper embed code from You Tube or other video and music services in your posts.
9. The layout confuses me, can I customize?
Yes, you can customize many aspects of the layout in the Display Preferences link in the box in the right hand column that has your login name at the top. You can change the size of columns, how many stories appear and even had newsfeeds to your page. We've included a Feminist News Feed you can just put a check mark in the box for, and it'll appear on your page when you login. But you can add any other RSS feeds you find on the web.
11. What's that number next to my name when I leave comments?
That's what's known as your Mojo. Other members can rate your comments (and you can rate theirs) based on whether they're appropriate for the site, thoughtful, funny, etc. The higher your rating is, the closer you get to being a "Trusted" member, which includes editorial privileges. On the flip side, if you are constantly flaming or making unhelpful comments your score will go down and you'll lose privileges. We encourage respectful debate and argument, but not personal attacks.
